Theatrical Set Design
{AC}
In 2013, Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre in Bangkok celebrated its 80th anniversary with a very special performance of Khon, a traditional form of masked dance structured around the storyline based on Thai myths and legends, mostly retelling the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana. The performance involves traditional singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics and music. Since Khon is a highly standardised traditional performance it comes with a number of limitations. The storyline and movements of actors are to a large extent fixed and the fact that most performers wear masks eliminates any chances of communicating through facial expression. Khon dances are often performed without any set decoration or against a blank canvass.

The 2013 production celebrating 80th anniversary of Sala Chalermkrung Theatre, centred on the story of Hanuman's loyalty to Rama, utilises complex set and lighting design with multimedia projection bringing a modern element to the traditional performance. The performance required eight different set changes: The Forest, The Garden of Apsaras, The Palace Garden, The Cliffs, The Underwater Kingdom, The Throne Room of Thotsakan, The Battlefield, and The Palace of Hanuman. The main set pieces were constructed from reinforced polystyrene foam. Some movable parts of the set, like the retractable cliffs, additionally utilised mechanical elements. The design was completed with three painted backdrops.
